R-Cubed and the Niskayuna mountain goats arrived in Schenectady Central Park on a cool crisp Sunday morning for their first competition since the season started in January. After the spring race season was delayed until September, and more recently all the official fall races being cancelled, the athletes were finally getting a chance to show off their fittness and skills in a friendly Dual meet.
Each Athlete signed up for 1 of 4 races. which were held in 2 sessions. The middle school groups went off at 11:00am and the High School races set off at 1:00pm to reduce crowds and allow for proper distancing. All athletes, coaches and parents were required to wear masks at all times unless racing to endure the safety of all.
This was some athletes first go at racing which was a great way for them to get their feet wet and see what racing is all about. While some struggled on the challenging course, they powered through to meet their goals. There was a handful of mechanicals, but volunteers were able to get most going again. It was so exciting to see 67 athletes challenge themselves and have fun!
Member of both teams did a fantastic job the week before marking the course, fixing bridges, cleaning up overgrowth and closing off unused paths. It was in the best shape it has been in in a long time Sunday morning!
Overall the day was a success! In a year of certaintity these athletes showed their resilience to never give up and achieve their goals. Smiles all around on a fantastic day.
Looking forward to another Scrimmage in October with the possibility of a couple more teams!
